It would not be an exaggeration to say that Dr. Joseph Shainsky was a true millionaire — not in wealth, but in the countless lives he enriched.
Throughout his extraordinary life, he brought lasting moments of happiness, hope, and wellbeing to millions of people. As a physician and Director of the Centers for Disease Control in the former USSR, he helped save lives and prevent epidemics. As an educator, he trained generations of medical students, and the textbooks he authored continue to be used in medical schools today.
Dr. Shainsky also distinguished himself as a researcher and scientist, with his work featured on television, radio, and in print publications.
During his retirement years, he founded Sunnyside Tours, Inc., a tour company in Los Angeles, California, where he volunteered as a tour guide without compensation. There, he continued generously sharing his extraordinary knowledge and passion for culture, history, and travel, helping Russian Americans discover the beauty of the United States and the world. Through these efforts, he ultimately touched the lives of more than 500,000 people.
Dr. Joseph Shainsky was one of those rare individuals who seemed to embody all the essential virtues: wisdom, magnanimity, integrity, justice, fortitude, love, self-discipline, optimism, hard work, gratitude, and humility.

The Dr. Joseph Shainsky Foundation℠, a public benefit nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, was established on February 27, 2012, in Los Angeles, California.
Our mission is to continue the legacy of Dr. Joseph Shainsky by bringing transcendent moments of joy to military veterans and their families, as well as to senior citizens, underserved communities, and individuals with disabilities, through our life-affirming complimentary sightseeing tours and musical theater productions.
In addition, DJSF℠ administers the Annual Dr. Joseph Shainsky Community Treasure Award℠, recognizing individuals for outstanding contributions to the wellbeing of the community.
The Dr. Joseph Shainsky Foundation℠ is also a proud participant in the annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade in Los Angeles, California.
